At the start of this brief my original intention was to produce a book on people running because they are late. This was based on my initial research where I found three seats and watched people. After continuing with this idea for a further week, I realised it just wasn’t something I was interested in and my heart wasn’t in it. I went back through my initial drawings and it was my first drawing that stuck out to me. It was that drawing that helped me to decide the way i would work throughout my book. I just needed a subject. I’ve worked at Fred Hallam Ltd for over two years and has been about of the Beeston (Nottingham) community since 1908. This would be my new subject. I was able to do a lot of research as I had a personal link to the shop. I think my research skills have developed during this brief; my research has been able to go much further than it did with my original idea. I have been able to go in and talk and watch people that work and shop there. As well as my personal knowledge on the shop, I was about to speak to the owner of the shop and the employees. This helped me put quotes in to my book. Being such an impact on the community, the shop was also in history books that my gran had on Beeston, which I later drew from for my final book.
The main skill I have developed during this brief is the making and binding of a book. At the start of the brief I learnt three ways in which I could bind a book and I really enjoyed learning how to do so. I also learnt how to lay out a book on InDesign and how to use multiply on photoshop to overlay layers. I took the skills I have learnt and combined them to make a book thjat I am so proud of.
I looked at the work of a few illustrators that I liked and they really influenced they method I used for this project. I tried to explore the use of new media as I wanted a mixed media affected in my book. During this brief I was interested in creating collages in the style from the hungry caterpillar book. I really wanted my collages to look textured. By colouring in masking tape I was able to then cut out shapes and the texture from the masking tape gave the collages a very slightly textured feel which I’m so happy with. As well as this I watch coloured pens and pencils and also watercolour paint. All this was then put in to photoshop to layout the artwork and clean up the drawings.
During the brief I have managed to keep on top of the work I had to do and produced in the time I had. In the past I have been known for being unorganised, but I have been making plans and organising my schedule. I consider my drawing style to be quite sketchy and has changed in the past few weeks and now looks confident and fluid. As well as this, I feel that I have considered the layout of my pages well. The centre pages and six fruit basket across the and three pages either side of the centre also had a sequence of drawings. I laid out my illustrations in a series or sequence.
I weakness of mine is that I’m quite stubborn when it comes to the media I use. I like fineliners and I work well with them so with every brief I try find a way to work with them. As well as this, despite feeling more confident in photoshop there are still skills and tools I need to learn. I few times during my photoshop work I found myself asking for help on how to do things. When it comes to fixing this, all I can do is just practice and I’ll improve in thje future. Another weakness of mine is keeping up with my blog. My blog is something I always forget about and I need to learn to try and blog every day and not get behind on it.
During future briefs I will try to improve on my prove reading and formatting on texts. As well as this; my attention to detail. When I looked through my book I noticed an error in the text and marks on the pages that I didn’t notice when it was on the screen. In the future I want to become more organised when it comes to updating my blog. I also want to improve on my development skills. I feel that when I have a picture of an idea in my head I get so set on that, that I forget or don’t want to develop because it’s a waste of time.
Overall, I’m really happy with how my book has turned out and the work I have produced towards it. Most things during this brief went to plan and I’ve got a lot of research based on my chosen subject.
