Visual skills evaluation

Since starting this module I have learnt that illustration isn’t just about making pretty pictures. Yes, I knew there was more to it already but after trying out these past four briefs I’ve seen learnt the thought process behind illustration pieces and what makes an illustration successful. During this module, I have learnt and improved skills. Although I like working with fine liners, I have tried to test different medias that I can use alongside my usually method of pens. This being the use of: coloured paper, ink and digital media. Before this module I know very little about using Photoshop and now I have learnt basic skills that I can imply to my work. I did so in my illustrations for ‘a day in a life brief. Using Photoshop helped me with my use of colour in that brief. Before starting this course I had never kept a blog so during this module I have learnt how to keep a successful blog to present my work, as well as how to do a successful group peer review.

During this module I have been forced to work in ways I am not use to. For example: having to produce 64 ideas in half an hour. Although this isn’t how I usually work I saw why we did it and I will be sure to use this method again. It forces me to come up with 64 drawings instead of only the few I would usually come up with. This last brief I decided to do last cut outs of superheroes. This made it difficult to find a media that would work well with this so I had to try out a few mediums and sizes of paper. This differs from how I usually work. I have never worked with large pieces of cut paper before and I was surprised at how successful it looked at the end.

The strengths I have shown in my work are that I pushed myself I played with size. This is shown in my last brief. I tried to think outside the box and usual formats and thought about how I could make it interesting.  Strengths in my work are most visible in my ‘a matter of opinion brief ‘. I think my development work has got stronger as the module progressed; it is clear by the amount of work for this brief compared top this others. I find it hard to get a project done in a short amount of time so I’ve surprised myself by being able to do so in this module.

Although in this last project have tested the use of different media I didn’t do so in the other briefs so that is a weakness of mine. I know how I like to work and what works well for me so I find it hard to work differently as I worry it won’t work as well. For example, during the ‘a day in the life’ brief I found a piece of illustration that I felt inspirational; I really liked the use of digital media. After seeing this I was set that that was how I wanted to do my piece therefore I felt no need to test other Medias. In future projects I will try to be more experimental with my work, I may surprise myself.

Looking back on this module, the five things I will do differently next time will be: Experiment with different use of line and other drawing/image making techniques (I found that doing visual language using a thicker line for tone worked really well); more testing of differently media; look at professional illustrators for inspiration; spend longer executing my final illustration for a higher quality final result; and try to think about my own tone of voice in order to stand out.
