My zine is complete!
I've finished my zine for Thoughtbubble! I didn't think I would be but I'm actually soooooooo happy with it. Since being briefed on this during May/June time, I've been really apprehensive as I didn't think my work was zine appropriate. I was over thinking it and kept putting it off. I decided to base it on the ocean as I thought it would allow my to draw fish and sea themed objects that were different shapes and patterns. The zine had to be black and white, so I thought picking imagery with patterns and textures would allow me to add more visually interesting elements to the drawings.
There was a specific order to the pages; one single image, then double page pattern, then smaller scattered drawings, then 3 animals, then in the middle a double page spread of a single drawing (the crab), then the order is the side but backwards. I think this added a sense of order and flow to the zine. It just meant that each page was different to the next really, but I think it works really well. As for the pages, my a favourites are the whales, the crab, and the stingray page. Within all these I added a subtle texture on top of the block black base. I then added detail with loose white line work which stood out against the black. This in a way felt like a mix of both my new textured shape style of working and my older loose line work.
I'm really happy with the cover. I wanted to keep in simple and not do another illustration. I liked the idea of creating a wave like texture that filled the page. The title 'Seventy One Percent' is the percentage of the earth surface that's covered by ocean. The title is simple and links to the imagery but is also a conversation stater, as it's not a fact most people just happen to know.
I printed my zine covers on to 5 different colours including white. This to me made then look a bit more interesting and stand out. I chose blues naturally because it's most related to the sea.
