Position Statement

During this past year I have identified my practice and have developed a strong direction. I feel that I am a self-motivated illustrator and designer with a passion for colour, line, pattern, shape and subtle texture. Drawing inspiration from nature, animals and food, working in both analogue and digital media to produce a large breadth of work suitable for a range of clients. I have developed a strong interested in packaging, products and connecting these to the promotion of socially responsible causes.

Through my progression I have come to realise my strengths and weaknesses. I consider illustrating scenes for publication to not be a preferred area of focus. However, recently I have seen a quality within my work that consists of motifs.

I have identified two halves to my practice. The first focuses on product and packaging through an exploration into merchandise, stationary and product range. Within this I have shown a strong interest in pattern and applied illustration. The second half of my practice demonstrates the educational aspect of my work, whereby I produce designs with the aim to tackle societal issues. I often form a link between my two areas of interest through the means of creating merchandise to engage people in educational projects.

Initially when I leave University I am going to be continuing with my project with Natural England and Leeds University where I will be producing work that focuses on both my interest in merchandise and societal issues.

My career goal is to produce work for both nationally and internationally established clients within the areas that I have stated. I hope to have a well-recognised tone of voice that is of high quality, and that I can produce work that is individual and unique compared to other practitioners.

Food illustration has become a large part of my practice and I intend to take this further through both sides of my work as well as the editorial area of illustration.

Speaking in terms of my interest in merchandise, my ultimate goal is to own my own brand, selling products such as prints, giftware and homeware, all showcasing my designs. To further my practice, I believe it would be of great benefit if I gain experience within a business that focuses within this area.

Summative Evaluation

This year’s focus has been applied illustration, products and packaging, making connections to societal issues. I wanted to focus on drawing objects and motifs rather than scenes - this came as a realisation after year 2 during my submission for the YCN Alice in Wonderland brief, so helped with the direction for my final year.

My work has a lot of direction now and I have come to see that education and eco values have played a strong part in my direction, making me realise I want to work on material with an educational and informative purpose.

My work is primarily digital, and process is initialised via extensive hand drawn work in my sketch books. During this year I have come to realise that my sketchbook work is a vital part of the process that I don’t omit just because the end result is digital. This part of the process is where I can experiment and gather inspiration regarding colour, object scale, placement as well as how they work with other objects and use of line. I have focused on using Photoshop this year as it is my package of choice; I used Illustrator during my first year at Leeds College of Art but it felt too restrictive, due to my lack of knowledge about its functions. Now I can use Photoshop effectively I can appreciate why Illustrator is important to use on a commercial scale, so I now aim to use the package again to develop a strong skill set in its use.

Exploring shape, colour and texture has always been important, however trying to create more texture in my digital work has been an area I have been keen to develop. Working with flat images and making them have depth and dimension via the use of digital processes such as the dissolve tool has been effective. I have revisited existing images and enhanced them digitally, looking at an image straight on and seeing instant depth that isn’t achieved by the objects placement, but by shading and overlaid textures. Pattern is also now used more in my practice, it fits well with the merchandise element of my work and is a way to apply my motifs in one place, giving them purpose, turning an image or collection of images in to a design using pattern, placement and repeat.

I know now that I can produce work for editorials after seeing what other food illustrators have produced. I now no longer restrict myself with belief that my work isn’t conceptual, however food and lifestyle magazines require simple motif, so because of this I have found that there is a place alongside the work of others for my work.

During my third year I have developed my collaborative skills, although I still know I prefer to work independently. However after engaging with the Royal Opera House photo-booth project with Aggie, I know I have the skills to work effectively with others. I usually prefer to work alone as I am self-reliant, but with good communication and an honest, open approach to my work, I feel good results were achieved. The project work was clearly divided, ideas were generated together using each other’s known strengths, clear and defined roles were allocated and the timescale was adhered to via the use of regular face to face and online meetings. The project worked as our work ethos gelled and we complimented each other artistically and in terms of our approach to study, I have a strong work ethic and work hard, never wanting to let others, or myself, down.

Building confidence has been a prominent skill to develop this year. Getting out there and conducting face-to-face research was daunting but I can see the value of doing that, so it has helped me focus, I won’t shy away from it now or turn work down as it had an element of contact

Contacting other practitioners for advice, was initially another daunting task as I was put off in case I was ignored, and would take it personally, however I don’t feel this anymore. People have been willing to give time and look over my work to provide useful feedback so I am less apprehensive about making an initial contact enquiry.

Developing a strong online presence and promotional pack has taken a lot of thought as I understand the importance of how I am perceived by others through this media and how it is important tool for me to use to communicate and get people to engage with me. I am happy with my the website I have produced for myself and the selection of work I have showcased. I now that it's something that I can update and change regularly depending on my work and tone of voice. I believe it to be a more professional way to showcase my work compared to Instagram.

I have come to realise that I need to believe in myself more and stop comparing myself to others so much. The PPP module has been integral in helping me develop my work and developing myself in terms of seeing myself as, and becoming professional. Embarking on commissioned work has increased my awareness of how the sector works and what options are open to me, giving me some experience of what it is I am hoping to do. This includes working as a commercial illustrator for a client, meeting deadlines, adhering to their specifications and so on. I have recently had my food waste project shortlisted for RSA (interview & presentation in London 9 May) which again should reassure me of my ability in a commercial sphere. My whole approach and practice has changed over the last three years, guided and shaped by my experiences on the course, I feel that when I leave LCA I will be leaving as an accomplished illustrator.

Professional Portfolio

Planning my portfolio for the RSA meeting

I've got to take my portfolio to the RSA presentation/interview in May and I currently don't my work printed ahhhhhhh! Luckily I have my physical portfolio (folder) already so I don't have to worry about that! Anyway the work that I take with me is going to be slightly different to my actual portfolio and I'm going to put all my CoP3 boards in it (which takes in 5 spaces already) as it'll be mostly focused on that work. I asked Aggie if she would help me decide what else to include because I have no idea what work to take and she was lovely enough to say yes!

We went through my website and picked out some work. The email from the RSA stated that I can only include up to 6 projects. Aggie said that a lot of my work is applied illustration and this area of my work would be most appropriate to take with me. She thought it would be best for me to show the breadth of areas my work can be applied to and I agree.

So, I have chosen to take:

1. Taste it, Don't Waste it (educational)
2. Your Garden, Their Home (educational)
3. Stationary (gifts and stationary)
4. Orthotics patten (health)
5. Sketchbook pages of project I'm currently working on (something to show people what to look forward to)
6. YCN Royal Opera House (advertising campaign) (Also shows that I collaborate well)

I think this will show great breadth of illustrations and my most successful bits of work. I'm going to get my boards ready and show them to Fred before I print!

Bett Norris

Bett Norris

http://www.bettnorrisillustration.com/index.html

I came across Bett Norris' work only today when I was looking through pdf portfolio examples. I think it's pretty obvious why I like her work... motifs! The map illustration relates to my final major project, the camping illustrations relate to my camping pattern and the utensils relate to my CoP pattern! So many lovely drawings! She describes her practice as 'fusing traditional drawing techniques with digital technology.' I'm honestly not sure how she does her textures but they're great! It really reminds me of Olivia's work actually! I'll have to see if she's seen her work before.

I've been a little worried about how far I can go with just drawing motifs and not scenes but recently I've found quite a few illustrators that illustrate mostly motifs, including Bett Norris.

Her clients include Tesco, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Red Magazine, Good Housekeeping, Computer Arts Magazine, Debrief, The School of Life and many more. Seeing this has shown my again that my work could exists with editorial/magazines.

Printed and Folded Promo Packs

Well this took a while! The photos aren't great but I've got some promo packs printed! I've cut and attached the pocket and it's looks good. It could be neater but I really struggled to make the edges nice a neat. I'm now finally going to send them out to people. I'm going to be taking my best one to London for the RSA meeting with me so I have something I can leave with them. I'm really happy with the covers. Last years promo pack was pink, green and grey and a bit dull really. This new promo pack is definitely more 'me' which is so important. The imagery also works well with all my other branding material.

Final Presentation

Watching the presentations these last couple of days has been really interesting but very long haha! My bum hurts from sitting for so long! It was interesting to see what everyone has been doing and what they intend to do after college. It was also strange to hear how many people don't see themselves as illustrators. I feel like the odd one out saying that I actually do see myself as an illustrator.

Going in to the presentation and even these few weeks leading up to it I got very nervous. I think a lot of people know I get very nervous about standing up in front of people and presenting. I got myself quite worked up over it these past few days and I can't express how happy I am that it's over! Last year my feedback said it was clear that I was nervous, and it really was... I was actually shaking! To my surprise, todays presentation went so much better.

I took the advice from Fred and used bullet points on the slides as pointers (as it worked for me in first year), rather than reading off a piece of paper which I did last year. This helped me not to stumble on my words as much. Annoyingly having text on the screen was brought up as negative feedback. I can understand why and hopefully this is something that I can stop doing eventually, but for now it's something that I know I need in order to present myself effectively.

Overall, the presentation went surprisingly well and once I'd started I felt a lot calmer. I think (hope) that I came across of confident and professional. I received some great feedback which left me feeling very happy about the presentation as a whole.

Contacting Hallmark

I contacted a lady called Rachel at Hallmark today and stressed my interest with an opportunity with there and how keen I am to work in that area of the industry. I sent her my CV along with a small version of my pdf portfolio which mainly focused on applied illustration and pattern based work. She replied pretty quickly and said my work looks great and she would keep my information on file. She told me that I should apply via HR rather than through her.

Natural England Update

I've nearly completed my illustrations for the Natural England brief. I'm enjoying it so much, I'm loving getting back in to hand drawing. I think I need to make sure that I develop my analogue skills as well as my digital. My recent work has been mostly digital and it's a shame to forget about my strengths in drawing. I absolutely LOVE drawing birds!! I think I need to start contacting more people that could be relevant to my wildlife drawings again like I did last year.

I want to make sure that I keep Shauni updated with where I am. I emailed her yesterday with the drawings that I have produced so far. She's really happy with them which is great to hear! I've really enjoyed this whole project so far and the people that I'm working with. It's a fantastic experience and has shown me that this is the kind of thing I want to do in the future.

(see studio practice blog for more detail on project)

RSA Student Design Awards - Being short-listed!!

WHAAATTTT??! I just received this! I've been short-listed for interview for the 2015/16 RSA Student Design Awards! How amazing is that?? I'm so happy!! I'm going down to London to do presentation and interview in May. I'm so scared, I get so nervous about doing presentations and I've been dreading the final presentation on Friday. Now I have to do another one?! My lovely mum's taken the day off work so we're going to go down the day before so I'm all ready and not late.

I'm so happy and proud of myself, I can't believe I've been chosen out of 145 people. This is such a confident boost! Aggie says I've got to believe in myself more and it's true, I don't believe in myself and my work enough and I'm constantly comparing myself to others.

For the interview I've also got to take my portfolio down which I was going to leave for a couple of weeks until I have a bit of work out the way but now I don't have time to do that! I need to work out what's going to be appropriate to get printed and put in my portfolio for them to see. Luckily my portfolio actually arrived today... it was fate haha! I'm getting my promo pack printed next week so I'm going to take one of them down too!!

Photos of my business cards

I asked the photography student who usually photographs my work if she would take some photos of my business cards. As they have curved edges, I'm finding it hard to find mock up templates to use for them. We played around with composition and I think they've come out really professional. During the course I've started to really see the importance of photographing you work well. I think it generally makes your work look a lot better and more professional. It shows that you see value and care in your work and take the time to go the extra mile.

Prodigar Update

I signed the contract that Francois had sent over and sent it back. It's been interesting to read through a contract and learnt first hand ow it all works. Obviously, we've been taught a bit about what to expect but I think I've understood it better through doing this. He said it's all fine and I'm now all set up with them! Woo! I've got to send over so images and then I'll be on their website. How exciting!

CV and Invoice

I mocked up my CV and invoice in order to make them look more professional for my presentation boards. Although the one on the right is in some ways more visually interesting in terms of composition, I prefer the one on the left as it's more clean and white. This will work better with my there presentation boards. It's nice to see my work mock-uped like this, it adds a level of professionalism. It's all starting to become real and I need to see myself as a professional.

Folio Submission

I submitted my work folio today! I really like the work of the illustrators they represent, particularly Owen Davey. I'd like to start contacting agencies via mail with maybe a hand written letter, I think this would make it more personal. I think it might also be beneficial to contact the particular agents individually. This will show that I've picked them out and that I'm really keen to be represented by them.

Look what just arrived!!

My business cards arrived today!! It all feels a little real now haha! I'm really happy that I printed them through MOO. When I compare them to the business cards I designs last year (printed at uni), the colours pop out a lot more with my new ones. They also feel a lot stronger and with the added curved corners, this should help prevent the corners from getting bent/damaged. Also, when I printed last years business cards the front and back didn't always line up which ruined the design. Overall, I'm really happy with the designs and I think they sum up my practice well and work well with my promo pack designs. Once I stopped overthinking the design I realised that I just had to keep it simple. At the end of the day it'll be something I can and should change whenever I want!

I put my old card and new card together and realised the size was so much different! I must have done the wrong dimensions last time.

Barthels Internship - Application Sent!

I sent off my Barthels Internship application today! It all looks a bit of a mess looking at it now but it wouldn't just attach the documents closed. I sent of 3 letters of recommendation, including one from Shauni who I'm working with on the Natural England project. Let's see what happens!

Finished Promo Packs

As I won't have my promo packs printed for my presentation I needed to mock them up. These will go towards my final presentation boards two. My promo pack comes in 3 different designs/patterns. These mockups communicates this well. I designed the business cards to work along side the promo packs. Like the packs, the business cards come in a few different patterns (the same as the one above). The cards fit neatly inside and matches the design on the cover. I think this make it all feel more as though it's a 'pack' as they all work cohesively together. I'm really happy with the quality of the mock-ups, I think it makes them look a lot more professional.

Crispin Orthotics Submissions

These are my submissions for the Crispin Orthotics Brief. I chose to keep it simple and looked at different footprints. I thought it would be a fun concept for a design that is meant to be worn on the foot or leg.

I also sent off these 2 designs I already had done.
